Tenants’ Rights Under Attack in West Philadelphia — An Interview with Asantewaa Nkrumah-Ture

Last Tuesday on February 8th, Philly Liberation Center volunteers interviewed Asantewaa Nkrumah-Ture, west Philly resident and community organizer, who is currently undergoing an eviction attempt by the new owner of her house by means of violent intimidation. Asantewaa was given a 30-day notice to vacate her home by the original owner in early February, and the next day after receiving notice met the new owner and his family who attempted to move in and force Asantewaa out. In this interview, Asantewaa recounts the violent threats made to her by the new owner and his family to intimidate her to prematurely move out, how the community supported Asantewaa throughout this ordeal, and why City Government needs to enact Good Cause legislation to protect tenants from facing off against similar attacks on their rights and livelihood.
